Darden Restaurants Reports Strong Earnings and Positive Growth Forecast

Darden Restaurants has made headlines in the financial world after surpassing Wall Street’s earnings and revenue expectations for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026. The success highlights not just the resilience of the company, known for its flagship brands like Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, but also paints a broader picture of consumer spending trends in the casual dining sector.

Earnings and Revenue Overview

On Friday, Darden reported an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $2.98, slightly surpassing the analyst consensus of $2.97. Total revenue reached $3.27 billion, comfortably above the anticipated $3.26 billion. In terms of net income, the company recorded $303.8 million, or $2.58 per share, compared to $308.1 million from the previous year.

Excluding expenses associated with its acquisition of Chuy’s Tex Mex, which added considerable scale to Darden’s operations, the adjusted EPS demonstrates the company’s solid performance. A significant contributor to the revenue increase was a 10.6% rise in net sales, propelled by the addition of 103 Chuy’s restaurants and a net increase of 25 new locations during the period ending May 25.

Same-Store Sales Growth

Perhaps most telling of consumer sentiment is Darden’s same-store sales growth, which rose by 4.6%, outpacing analysts’ projections of 3.5%. This growth was particularly robust in Darden’s well-known brands. Olive Garden, representing roughly 40% of Darden’s quarterly revenue, experienced a significant same-store sales increase of 6.9%, exceeding the analysts’ expectations of 4.6%. LongHorn Steakhouse also posted impressive results, with same-store sales climbing 6.7%, compared to expected growth of just 5.3%.

Darden’s CEO, Rick Cardenas, pointed to the return of the Olive Garden’s popular "Buy One Take One" deal as a key factor in boosting sales. This initiative, which gives customers the option to take home an additional meal, had not been seen in five years and appears to resonate well with patrons looking for value and convenience.

Looking Ahead: Fiscal 2026 Forecast

As Darden looks to the full fiscal 2026, it has set its sights on revenue growth of 7% to 8%. This forecast accounts for an additional week in the fiscal year, which is expected to contribute approximately 2% to this growth. Adjusted earnings are anticipated to land between $10.50 and $10.70 per share, with 20 cents of that stemming from the extra week.

Despite some signs indicating that consumers are tightening their spending, Cardenas remains optimistic. He stated that diners are still willing to spend on casual dining experiences, suggesting that Darden is capturing a larger share of the market from quick-service and fast-casual dining establishments.

Segment Performance Insights

While Darden’s core brands excelled, the fine dining segment, which includes Ruth’s Chris Steak House and The Capital Grille, faced challenges. The fine dining category saw a same-store sales decline of 3.3%, contrasting sharply with the minor drop of 0.2% that analysts had predicted. Nevertheless, CFO Raj Vennam noted a slight improvement in traffic from higher-income households, indicating potential for recovery in this segment.

The remaining part of Darden’s portfolio, which includes Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen and Yard House, also performed decently with a same-store growth of 1.2%, slightly above forecasts of 1.1%. In an effort to boost engagement with its customer base, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen has recently partnered with Uber Direct for an on-demand delivery pilot program, which has now expanded to almost all of its locations.

Strategic Moves and Future Directions

In an important strategic pivot, Darden announced the closure of 15 Bahama Breeze locations during the last quarter. Cardenas mentioned that the brand is not a "strategic priority" for Darden, suggesting that the company may consider various options for Bahama Breeze, including potential sales or conversions to other Darden brands.

Moreover, the company is bolstering investor confidence through a newly authorized $1 billion share repurchase program, which replaces the previous authorization and has no expiration date. The markets reacted positively, with Darden’s stock up nearly 2% on the announcement day and an overall year-to-date increase of about 19% as of the preceding Wednesday’s close.

This robust performance against a backdrop of cautious consumer spending demonstrates Darden Restaurants’ ability to adapt and thrive in the evolving dining landscape. With strong brand performances, strategic acquisitions, and a solid growth forecast, Darden continues to be a pivotal player in the casual dining sector.
