A significant winter storm wreaked havoc on holiday travel in the Northeast U.S. over the weekend, resulting in over 1,400 flight cancellations and 11,000 delays. This disruption comes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, testing airlines’ resilience as they navigate the challenging weather conditions.

Despite earlier forecasts predicting heavier snowfall, the storm delivered less than anticipated. However, several major airports, including New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, recorded over four inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

At JFK, over 130 flights—approximately 20% of scheduled departures—were canceled. LaGuardia Airport followed suit with 87 cancellations, also accounting for about 20% of its flights, while Newark experienced 72 cancellations, making up 12% of its scheduled departures.

In preparation for the storm, airlines had proactively canceled more than 1,700 flights on Friday, mainly before the onset of the weather. Further cancellations were reported on Sunday, adding to the chaos with nearly 400 flights scrubbed.

Amid the turmoil, major airlines such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and JetBlue Airways waived change fees for customers with basic economy tickets. They also suspended fare differences for travelers rescheduling flights into and out of various airports in the Northeast, urging passengers to make changes before the year’s end. With the busy Christmas week approaching, travelers are encouraged to fly as early as possible due to limited seat availability.

According to Airlines for America, a trade association representing the airline industry, carriers are expected to accommodate a record 52.6 million passengers between December 19 and January 5, with peak travel days falling on Fridays and Sundays.

To minimize disruption during severe weather events, airlines typically cancel flights in advance to prevent stranding aircraft, crew members, and passengers, thereby allowing for smoother operations once conditions improve.

As travelers navigate the snowy conditions, planning ahead and remaining flexible are key strategies for making it home this holiday season.
