Lamborghini Faces Tariff Uncertainty as Buyers Hesitate<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the luxury automotive market navigates shifting economic landscapes, Lamborghini is feeling the pinch of tariff uncertainties that have prompted some high-end buyers to delay their purchases. CEO Stephan Winkelmann recently addressed these challenges during an interview with CNBC, explaining how a prevailing lack of clarity surrounding tariff rates is affecting even the wealthiest clientele of the iconic supercar brand.<\/p>\n

Though the White House has announced a tentative agreement with Europe to reduce tariffs to 15%, this rate is yet to be implemented for car imports. Presently, Lamborghini and other European automakers are dealing with a steep tariff of 27.5% on exports to the United States. With Lamborghini’s starting price point around $400,000, potential buyers are opting to wait for more stable tariff conditions before finalizing their purchases.<\/p>\n

“Some are waiting because they want to be sure that this is the final number that is going to be in place,” Winkelmann noted. He emphasized that even the wealthy are sensitive to price fluctuations, highlighting that “they are millionaires or billionaires for a reason; they know what they’re doing and why they’re doing things.”<\/p>\n

Despite the current hurdles, the luxury automaker remains somewhat insulated from immediate declines in demand due to a substantial backlog of orders. Vehicles currently being delivered were ordered a year or two ago, and the company recently informed dealers of impending price increases: 7% for the Temerario<\/em> and Urus<\/em> models, and 10% for the Revuelto<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Lamborghini’s parent company, Volkswagen’s Audi Group, reported an impressive revenue of over 3 billion euros ($3.5 billion) for 2024 and highlighted the delivery of nearly 11,000 cars. The brand has embraced innovation with three new models launched since 2023, all plug-in hybrids: the Temerario<\/em>, an 8-cylinder model replacing the Huracan<\/em>; the 12-cylinder Revuelto<\/em>, replacing the Aventador<\/em>; and the hybrid SUV, Urus SE<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Lamborghini plans to introduce an all-electric grand touring car by 2028. However, Winkelmann revealed that expectations of slowing EV demand might prompt a shift towards a hybrid model instead, with a final decision expected by year’s end. He indicated a broader trend of “flattening acceptance” of electric cars, saying, “For a car like Lamborghini, it\u2019s not important to be the first to showcase new technology but to excel with the best technology when it\u2019s accepted.”<\/p>\n

In a vibrant showcase at last week’s Monterey Car Week, Lamborghini unveiled the Fenomeno<\/em>, a limited-production supercar boasting a staggering 1,080 horsepower and acceleration from 0 to 60 in just 2.4 seconds, thanks to a 6.5-liter V12 engine paired with three electric motors. Only 29 of these exclusive vehicles will be produced, aligning with the brand’s “few-offs” strategy that emphasizes hyper-performance variants for elite clients.<\/p>\n

Lamborghini is also witnessing a diversification in its customer base, with an increasing percentage of young and female buyers. The brand has noted that many owners now average five cars in their collections, while those opting for higher-priced models maintain an average of ten. The average age of Lamborghini buyers has fallen below 45 globally, and in Asia, it is even under 30.<\/p>\n

“There are many countries with very young customers, including second-generation wealthy individuals and self-made entrepreneurs,” Winkelmann pointed out. He also noted that women are becoming instrumental to the brand’s growth, particularly through the introduction of the Urus<\/strong>, increasing the number of female buyers and the establishment of women-focused events like “She Drives a Lambo.”<\/p>\n

Maintaining an exclusive appeal remains a top priority for Lamborghini. Even as global wealth expands, the company purposely manages its production to prevent overshadowing individual markets. Winkelmann affirmed, “We will always look to ensure we do not overcrowd any market while maintaining a global perspective in our sales strategy.”<\/p>\n
