Introducing the Wealthesaurus: A New Guide to Wealth Management Terminology

In an increasingly complex financial landscape, clarity is key, especially for high-net-worth individuals navigating the often-confusing world of wealth management. To address this challenge, the Ultra High Net Worth Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving services for wealthy families and investors, has launched the Wealthesaurus—a robust crowdsourced glossary aimed at demystifying wealth-related terminology.

Understanding the Initiative

This innovative project features over 80 terms that are commonly used—and sometimes misused—within the wealth management industry. From “family office services” to “assets under advisement,” the Wealthesaurus seeks to standardize language and provide clear definitions to help clients make informed decisions. Jim Grubman, content and curriculum chair at the Institute, notes, “There are a lot of garbage terms, a lot of marketing terms being tossed around. The motivation here is to counteract some of the BS in the field.”

The Wealthesaurus arises from a growing need for clarity as the wealth management industry has seen an influx of gimmicks and misleading language. According to Cerulli Associates, by 2024, households worth $5 million or more will control an estimated $49 trillion in financial wealth, underscoring the escalating competition among financial service providers.

Addressing Misleading Terminology

One of the terms under scrutiny is “multifamily office.” Traditionally, this term describes a service model in which a family office expands its offerings to a select number of outside families, providing bespoke services. However, the rise of Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs) and large advisory firms has led to a democratization of the term, diluting its original meaning. The Wealthesaurus emphasizes that true multifamily offices should serve at least 10 complex, multigenerational families with median net worths of at least $30 million.

Another contentious term is “assets under advisement” (AUA), which firms often use to inflate the perception of assets they’re managing. The Wealthesaurus provides precise definitions for various asset terms, urging clients to inquire specifically how firms calculate their assets.

The Inception of the Wealthesaurus

The Wealthesaurus was born from discussions at the Institute regarding clarity in terminology—employees frequently found themselves at odds over definitions of common phrases. Grubman and Tara Kehoe, the Institute’s library manager, began with an internal glossary but saw the potential for a public resource that could benefit clients across the industry.

Though a title of “Wealthipedia” was considered, it was ultimately discarded. Instead, “Wealthesaurus” was chosen alongside a whimsical dinosaur mascot, symbolizing the project’s approachable yet informative nature. The Institute encourages users to contribute further terms and definitions, making it a dynamic repository of wealth management language.

A Tool for Diverse Disciplines

One of the Wealthesaurus’s advantages is its cross-disciplinary appeal. As wealth management overlaps with various sectors—from estate planning to philanthropy—the glossary serves as a bridge, allowing professionals to communicate effectively across disciplines.

While the Wealthesaurus does not aim to cover every term used in wealth management, it seeks to fill gaps where explanations can be cumbersome or overly technical. By enhancing user engagement—average visitors spend over seven minutes exploring definitions—the Institute hopes to foster a deeper understanding of wealth management among clients.

Clarity for All Investors

Ultimately, the Wealthesaurus aims not only to clarify terms but also to empower investors in making knowledgeable choices. As the wealth management landscape continues to evolve, resources like the Wealthesaurus will be invaluable in fostering trust and transparency between advisors and their clients.
