Darden Restaurants Reports Strong Sales Growth

On December 16, 2025, Darden Restaurants, which operates popular chains like Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, announced impressive sales growth during a recent earnings report. The company attributed this upward trend to increasing demand amidst a backdrop where consumers are keen on finding value at their favorite dining spots.

Financial Highlights

Darden reported a significant fiscal second-quarter net income of $237.2 million, which translates to $2.03 per share, marking an increase from $215.1 million, or $1.82 per share, a year earlier. While the earnings slightly missed analysts’ expectations at $2.08 adjusted versus $2.10 expected, the company still managed to surpass revenue forecasts, recording $3.1 billion against an anticipated $3.07 billion. This net sales figure represents a robust 7.3% increase, demonstrating the brand’s resilience as broader industry sales growth lags.

CEO Rick Cardenas expressed confidence in the company’s performance, citing positive same-store sales across all segments. "The second quarter exceeded our top-line expectations," he stated, contributing to a nearly 3% rise in the company’s shares during morning trading.

Segment Performance Overview

Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse
Olive Garden, which constitutes roughly 44% of Darden’s sales, reported a commendable same-store sales growth of 4.7%. A major contributor to this growth was the $13.99 Never Ending Pasta Bowl promotion, alongside an enhancing delivery business. In a strategic response to inflation concerns, Olive Garden has also introduced smaller portion options at reduced prices for select menu items, improving its value perception among diners.

LongHorn Steakhouse emerged as a high performer as well, showcasing a 5.9% increase in same-store sales. Despite being perceived as a more expensive dining choice, Cardenas highlighted that many consumers are opting for LongHorn due to the competitiveness of prices on beef, which can sometimes be more affordable than purchasing from grocery stores.

Other Business Segments
Darden’s other segments, including Yard House, reported a 3.1% growth in same-store sales, underscoring the brand’s diversity and adaptability. Fine-dining establishments, such as Ruth’s Chris and The Capital Grille, experienced a modest growth of 0.8% in same-store sales, a commendable feat considering the difficulty many in the sector have faced in recent times. To attract budget-conscious diners, Ruth’s Chris has reintroduced a $55 three-course meal deal, which has proven to be mutually beneficial.

Economic Factors Influencing Sales

Despite rising ingredient costs, particularly for beef, Darden has been able to stand out by keeping menu price increases below inflation. This practice has allowed the company to maintain customer traffic, especially among high-income consumers looking for value in casual dining. Interestingly, while demand from lower-income diners (earning less than $50,000 annually) experienced a slight dip, there was increased visitation from consumers aged 55 and above, indicating changing demographics in diner behavior.

Adjusted Growth Projections

Looking ahead, Darden raised its sales growth projections for the fiscal year 2026 to an expected range of 8.5% to 9.3%, up from a previous forecast of 7.5% to 8.5%. This new estimate accounts for a 53rd week within the fiscal year, which is expected to contribute approximately 2% to sales growth. However, the company also adjusted its expectations for inflation to 3.5%, indicating a strategic acknowledgment of challenges ahead that could impact margins. Despite these pressures, Darden reiterated its forecast for adjusted earnings per share in the range of $10.50 to $10.70.

In summary, Darden Restaurants has proven flexible and adaptive, successfully navigating a competitive dining landscape while responding to consumer needs. The effective use of promotions, menu adaptations, and strategic pricing all contribute to a strong position as the brand looks ahead to potential growth amidst economic challenges.
