Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake System Faces Its Largest Test Yet

The backlog has resulted in unprecedented wait times for validators wishing to exit, exceeding 46 days on a recent Monday. This is the longest wait period in Ethereum’s staking history; prior to this, the exit queue peaked at 18 days in August. This surge reflects not just the mechanics of the PoS system but also the broader dynamics affecting cryptocurrency markets.
The Kiln Effect
A pivotal moment occurred on September 9 when Kiln, a prominent infrastructure provider, opted to exit all of its validators as a precautionary measure. This decision was influenced by various security incidents, including the notable NPM supply-chain attack and a breach at SwissBorg. In a single move, Kiln sent about 1.6 million ETH into the exit queue. Although these security issues were unrelated to Ethereum’s staking protocol, they raised alarms about the overall safety of the ecosystem, prompting Kiln to pause operations.
Profit-Taking and Institutional Adjustments
Benjamin Thalman, Senior Analyst at staking provider Figment, emphasizes that the current backlog isn’t solely due to security concerns. The increase in ETH’s value—rising over 160% since April—has induced many stakers to take profits, further complicating the situation. A Growing Validator Base
Interestingly, while exits are rising, the number of validators entering the Ethereum staking ecosystem is also on an upward trajectory. This resurgence is partly spurred by the SEC’s May statement, clarifying that staking does not qualify as a security. Churn Limits and Exit Challenges
Ethereum’s architecture includes a safeguard known as the churn limit, which restricts how many validators can exit or enter the network within a set timeframe. Currently capped at 256 ETH per epoch (approximately 6.4 minutes), this mechanism is vital for maintaining network stability. With over 2.5 million ETH waiting to exit, stakers now face a wait time of about 44 days before even reaching the cooldown step.
Implications for Re-staking
Thalman posits that a significant portion of the exiting ETH will likely be re-staked under new validators. If around 75% of the current queue chooses to re-deposit, this could result in nearly 2 million ETH flooding the activation queue. Consequently, new stakers would face further delays; Thalman estimates that this could lead to a cumulative wait time of up to 129 days when considering current activation queues and potential future inflows from ETFs.
