The Engine Behind SoFloGO
Launched on August 11, the SoFloGO app is powered by advanced trip-planning technology from Moovit and the payment systems of Genfare. The partnership under the guidance of the federal Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) symbolizes a major step toward improving regional transit options. "Riders can now access real-time information from Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Tran, and Tri-Rail all in one place,” explains Coree Cuff Lonergan, CEO and General Manager of Broward County Transit.
Real-Time Data and Payment Integration
One of the standout features of SoFloGO is its ability to aggregate live data feeds from multiple transit agencies, providing users with up-to-the-minute transit information. In addition to simplifying trip planning, the app facilitates fare payments through a unified system, ensuring that revenue is efficiently directed back to the appropriate agencies. This means riders can manage their travel expenses using a single platform while enjoying the benefits of using multiple transit services.

Broward County Transit is currently undergoing a vast expansion, which includes plans to add 200 miles of new service and diversify transit options beyond traditional buses. The ambitious $4.3 billion initiative, supported by federal and state funding as well as a local penny sales surtax, seeks to enhance public transportation through light rail, bus rapid transit, and high-frequency routes. SoFloGO is integral to connecting with riders and holistically supporting this ambitious expansion.

The concept of a unified transit app isn’t a recent idea; Lonergan highlights that it’s been in the works for a decade. Initial challenges included technical limitations and the complexities of integrating diverse systems. However, as technology has evolved, so too has the vision for a collaborative approach among the agencies involved. “There was a full-on commitment from all the leaders of these respective agencies to push it through,” she notes, emphasizing that this collaboration reflects a shared goal of improving transit systems for the community.

While the current version of SoFloGO has no immediate plans for additional features such as ride-share integration or predictive routing, the collaborative spirit established among the agencies lays the groundwork for possible future updates. “We’re relishing in the fact that it’s live and it’s being adopted by so many,” Lonergan mentions, noting that the app has already been downloaded over 4,000 times since its launch.
