The Value of Ignorance: A Journey into the Unknown
When embarking on any new venture, ignorance can often feel like a disadvantage. However, I’ve come to realize that beginning with limited knowledge can actually serve as a blessing. Had I understood the complexity and demands of government contracting from the outset, I might have hesitated or even given up. Instead, my journey began with curiosity and a commitment to learning, prompting me to explore resources like books and YouTube.
Discovering Resources and Finding Inspiration
It was during this exploratory phase that I stumbled upon Eric and his channel, as well as the Goon Channel. What struck me most about Eric was his authenticity. His methods felt genuine and approachable, breaking down complex concepts into relatable language that anyone could understand. This accessibility fueled my determination. If he could do it, why couldn’t I? With belief in the process and countless success stories from others, it didn’t take long for my perspective to shift. I had no idea what lay ahead, but the belief that our moment would arrive was ever-present.
Meeting Challenges Head-On
Reflecting back, I had no clue I would eventually steer a government contracting business. In fact, I grew up in Montreal, Canada, where I was put on academic probation during my high school years. My aspirations to manage people sprang from a long-held desire, even if the road was less than clear. I faced a series of setbacks while trying to secure my first job, ultimately leading me to the States to live with my father. Enrolling at Monmouth State College, I found myself navigating a new language and culture.
Jumping into the workforce, I took on two entry-level positions at Ikea and FedEx. The pivotal moment arrived when I became one of the youngest managers in the Northeast at FedEx, managing a team of around 35 employees—an exhilarating but daunting responsibility. Yet, despite this success, I found myself longing to pilot planes rather than manage logistics.
A New Horizon: Becoming an Airline Pilot
The initial step into aviation was driven by the chance to fulfill a childhood dream, and eventually, I became an airline pilot with Delta Airlines. This part-time role granted me the freedom to explore business opportunities. While consulting for aviation parts companies, I noticed the government’s significant procurement power and started to consider how I could tap into this lucrative market.
Embracing the Unknown in Government Contracting
My plunge into government contracting came with its own set of challenges and unknowns. I had no prior experience navigating the complexities of government bids or the necessary regulations. Yet, this ignorance proved advantageous—much like my earlier pursuits in aviation. Without knowing how hard it could be, I was more willing to take risks and push boundaries.
With resources now available online, I eagerly sought out training. My discoveries led me to Eric’s channel and community, where understanding grew alongside networking opportunities. I quickly realized that I wasn’t alone; countless others were on a similar journey, each carving their own path to success.
Establishing the Business and Finding Success
Through relentless effort and learned persistence, I assembled a team and laid the groundwork for Two Lions Aerospace. Without government contracting experience, I leaned on past performances and wisdom learned from others. The process of securing contracts was surprisingly encouraging and illusive at the same time.
Achieving our first award—a toggle switch for $2,400—validated our efforts and opened the floodgates for more contracts. The next challenge was clear: we needed to build a portfolio of small wins to strengthen our bidding credibility. We bid on everything, from screws to large components, embracing both the big and small wins as stepping stones in our journey.
The Learning Process: Challenges and Adaptation
However, the challenges didn’t cease once contracts started flowing in. The logistics of fulfilling government contracts were daunting, and confusion often accompanied our shipments. Navigating paperwork, packaging requirements, and compliance rules became daily hurdles to overcome.
There were many late nights, phone calls, and countless lessons learned. Each bump in the road only strengthened our resolve. Working together as a team made all the difference, allowing us to effectively share duties and leverage our combined skills.
The Road Ahead: Goals and Future Aspirations
Fast forward to today, we’ve crossed the one-year mark, securing 96 awards and building a bustling business. As our understanding of this vast field deepens, we recognize the need to specialize more within our niche while exploring opportunities for growth. The goal is to amplify our reach, maximize our successes, and mentor others aiming to step into government contracting.
What I’ve learned on this journey is that ignorance can be a double-edged sword. It sparks courage and drives action, but it also necessitates a commitment to ongoing learning. Each challenge is a lesson in resilience, propelling us forward into uncharted territory.
In sharing my story, I hope to inspire you to embrace your own journey into the unknown with confidence, knowing that whatever obstacles may arise, they too are stepping stones toward success. Whether you’re a student, a seasoned professional, or anyone in between—believe in your capability to adapt, learn, and achieve. Your moment will come.
