Spring Cleaning Your Crypto Portfolio for 2025

After months of volatility and uncertainty in the crypto market, it’s time for some strategic reflection. Instead of chasing losses or doubling down on underperforming investments, it’s crucial to focus on the best-in-class cryptocurrencies that can potentially elevate your portfolio in 2025. Below is a breakdown of five cryptocurrencies to consider offloading as you spring clean your investments.

Dogecoin and Shiba Inu: The Meme Coin Hangover

Let’s start with the speculative meme coins that may still linger in your portfolio—Dogecoin (DOGE) and Shiba Inu (SHIB). Despite a recent rally in meme coins, these two still show significant year-to-date losses—Dogecoin is down 25%, while Shiba Inu sits at a 22% decline.

Many investors recall the explosive rise of these coins during the last major crypto bull market in 2020-21, leading to a reluctance to part with them in hopes of another miraculous recovery. However, it’s important to recognize the harsh reality: Dogecoin is down 68% from its all-time high in May 2021, and Shiba Inu is down a staggering 82% from its peak in October 2021. The truth is, these coins likely won’t bounce back.

Notably, Cathie Wood of Ark Invest has expressed skepticism about meme coins, arguing that most will eventually prove worthless. While a few may become digital collectibles, they’re not reliable investments.

Cardano and Avalanche: Distressed Layer 1 Competitors

When it comes to Layer 1 blockchain platforms, Ethereum remains the leader, showcasing a remarkable 57% rally in the last month alone. In this crowded marketplace, however, second-tier Ethereum competitors like Cardano (ADA) and Avalanche (AVAX) are struggling to gain serious traction.

The overly saturated Layer 1 blockchain landscape leaves little room for multiple winners, making it vital to focus on those with real potential to usurp Ethereum’s dominance. Right now, Solana (SOL) stands out as a frontrunner, boasting a market cap three times that of Cardano and ten times that of Avalanche.

Solana’s rising status also positions it well for potential spot ETF approval, which could invite a wave of institutional investment. In contrast, Cardano and Avalanche seem unlikely to capture similar institutional interest, limiting their potential upside. Without that robust institutional backing, their chances of widespread adoption remain slim.

Litecoin: The Underperforming Veteran

Next up is Litecoin (LTC). While it appeared poised for a strong year earlier on, driven by buzz about its potential inclusion in a spot ETF, it has faltered since then. As of now, it’s flat for the year—despite a 34% rally recently—and sits a hefty 75% below its all-time high of $413 from May 2021.

Despite being one of the oldest and most established cryptos, this proof-of-work currency struggles to distinguish itself in a rapidly evolving market. The most recent halving event in August 2023 failed to generate the anticipated excitement or price action. Moving forward, there are far more promising cryptocurrencies to consider for long-term gains.

The "Sell in May" Strategy for Crypto Investors

In the world of investing, there’s a classic adage: "Sell in May, and go away." This principle can easily be applied to your crypto investments. The idea is to offload lagging assets during a weaker market phase and refocus on top-tier cryptocurrencies that align with strong fundamentals and growth potential.

Going forward, my strategy emphasizes retaining investments in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana while clearing out underperformers like Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, Cardano, Avalanche, and Litecoin. By making these strategic moves, you’ll position yourself for a more favorable second half of the year.

Stay informed, stay strategic, and embrace the opportunities ahead!
